When are Strawberries in season in the UK?

In the United Kingdom, strawberries will grow consistently through May, June and July. The peak season has always been considered May, spreading through to the start of June. This is part of the reason why strawberries are the food of choice at Wimbledon because this is when they’re at their most delicious!

In terms of location of the UK in which strawberries are grown in, this is varied due to the climate being fairly similar through the UK in the summertime. Of course, regions like Somerset and Devon are fantastic places to grow strawberries due to the Southernly location. There are many places in the South West of the Uk that you can actually go and pick your own strawberries from farms. This is a great day out for the kids and a good option for the whole family. There’s also the option of growing the strawberries yourself, which is becoming more and more popular as people become aware how easy strawberries are to grow.

Although Elsanta is most popular variety of strawberry, many people choose to go for a different brand if they are growing them themselves.

Strawberries are healthy, right?

Yep. Strawberries are considered by many to be one of the healthiest fruits that you’ll find, due to their low calories and nutrient profile. Each cup of strawberries is only around 50-60 calories. This makes them an extremely good option if you’re looking for something filling that you can eat copious amounts of. That means for every 500g of strawberries, you’re only eating around 140-160 calories. That’s insanely low, right?

If you’re worried about their potential high sugar, that’s another benefit of easting strawberries. As a rule, they’re pretty low in carbohydrates and sugar, with roughly 7 or 8 grams of sugar per 100g. That makes them an ideal snack for someone doing a ketogenic diet.

There are many other benefits that you can get from eating strawberries aside from their calorie count. They’re a fantastic source of vitamin C; you’ll get your whole daily requirement of Vit C for each cup of strawberries that you eat. They also contain a decent amount of potassium and magnesium too, which is one of the most commonly recorded electrolyte deficiencies occurrent in recent years.

Strawberries also help to increase the blood flow in your body, boost your memory and can help you to lose stored fat. Pretty great, right?

Are strawberries berries?

Technically, no. Strawberries are technically not berries, though we will certainly forgive you for thinking that. Believes it or not, technically a banana is a type of berry, though a strawberry is not. This is due to the fact that to be considered a berry, the berry must grow from one flower with one ovary. This is not the case for the strawberry, as it’s flowers have more than one ovary.

Can I freeze strawberries?

Yes, certainly. This is one of the best things about strawberries, and is something that I often choose to do in the summertime when they are cheapest! If you’re freezing them whole, try to pick the dark red, ripest ones as they certainly freeze the best. Whack them in a freezer back, squeeze the air out and they’ll be ready to freeze.
